Each summer the Rockingham Police Department sponsors the Junior Police Academy during mid July for youth ages 11-17. The program is designed for teenagers who may later become interested in police work. There are 25 slots available and all applicants are approved by Chief Voorhees, along with a recommendation from a teacher or principal. The youth that attend JPA receive instruction by officers on crime scene processing, report management, drug awareness and identification, and all aspects within the police department. It is a hands-on learning experience with activities and instruction designed to give them a real sense of what police work entails. Classes are attended on a daily basis for one week, with lunches provided, and upon completion of the program, graduates receive certificates at the annual National Night Out event held in August.
